Post-Madrid

Living in Madrid, for nearly a month was a beautiful experience because it was something different. I realize that Madrid is similar to New York City in the sense that Madrid is also a city that never sleeps. But being there was not like being in New York City or anywhere in the United States because of the vibrancy of the city; the Spanish culture dripped from the sweat of the people and the busyness of the streets. Live music on the subway train, acts in the middle of the day on the streets, sangria, dancing in the streets, ham hanging out of store windows, siestas and fans waving in each direction was the everyday (or almost every day) scene in Madrid. And although seeing things like that on a daily or weekly basis could become mundane, it caused me to appreciate the simple things in life that would make one happy such as food, music, and the laziness that the summer heat brings. Aside from the music, food, and naps I also enjoyed trying to speak Spanish and being fully surrounded by the language. It was truly amazing experience because I was immersed in Spanish and felt as if my understanding increased greatly.

As I mentioned in the 'Pre-Madrid' post, Paris was not all what it's cracked up to be; the city was cold, dark and wet. In comparison to Madrid which was hot, sunny, and inviting, entering Paris was like entering a sub-division of hell. While I was there I got a cold, I ate cheese all the time (which is torture for a person who is lactose-intolerant), I couldn't speak/practice Spanish and everything was expensive! How can you go to Paris and eat only McDonald's?! What a shame. The country was too wet and expensive which was very annoying. Other than seeing the Eiffel Tower which I have to admit is a beautiful sight (and experience) to see in not only the day but especially at night, Paris is a city I would not want to go to again.

Aside from some problems with the Forspro administration (with lack of communication), the overall program was great because it was a learning, enriching experience. The students that I met were not only nice but funny. It was amazing how they too were enthusiastic about learning the Spanish language and the Spanish culture. It was refreshing to be around students with and without Spanish background collaborating with one another to understand the city of Madrid and the other neighboring cities visited. As I mentioned in my 'Pre-Madrid' blog the overall program was a true voyage from the long 9-10 hour plane ride entering into the city, to the day/ night travelling, to meeting different students with sometimes not so friendly attitudes, going to do different cities, catching a cold, smelling stinky subways, to getting back on 9-10 hour flight back to Atlanta.

Semana Cuatro: Santiago Bernabéu

Porque no soy una grande hincha de fútbol, yo decidí ir a el estadio de Santiago Bernabéu (Santiago Bernabéu stadium) para me intentar a entendimiento el amor entre Madrid y fútbol. Lo fue un interesante experiencia porque yo tengo nunca vi un estadio que grandísimo para fútbol. ¿Americano fútbol? Sí. ¿Beisbol? Sí. ¿Pero para fútbol? Nunca yo tener visto en el Estados Unidos. Aunque lo fue raro me gusta como Madrid está enamorado fútbol a tener un estadio que grandísimo y hermoso; cuando yo caminé la escalera del estadio yo tuve un intenso sentimiento en mi cuerpo como si yo fue de pie en alguna parte estupendo.

No sόlo el estadio pero donde lo es situar es también interesante a me. El estadio de Santiago Bernabéu es situar en una normal zona con solamente edificios de oficina, los apartamentos y tiendas local; la zona es muy normal yo fui no seguro me estuve en Madrid. Es probable bueno que la zona es normal porque lo trae más atención para el estadio. Porque la zona es no ocupada con turistas y turista como cosas, lo suma a la idea que fútbol es como normal a Madrid como el calor del verano.

Después yo vi el estadio una parte de mí deseo yo soy una grande hincha de fútbol o estuve al día en el equipo de Madrid a mejor apreciar el estado y qué lo medio a la gente de Madrid y España . Aparte de que me gusta visto que tranquilo parte de Madrid.

Semana Tres: Gran Via

En el libro “Madrid: Cities of the Imagination” por Elizabeth Nash, las descripciones de los edificios de Gran Vía son exacto. Cuando yo camine de la escalera del metro a la calle principal yo estaba asombrado porque los edificios son muy grandiosos y hermosos. No solamente la arquitectura pero la altura de los edificios añadan a la historia de la ambiente artística de Gran Vía.

Otra que los edificios, también la gente fue interesante. La zona estaba llenar con cuatro tipos de gente: turista, los vecinos, oficial policías, y prostitutas. Prostitutas en el día? Sí. Y nadie se preocupe sobre. Aunque Gran Vía y Sol son al lado de cada otra la diferencia en interacción de gente es muy interesante. Toda de Gran Vía fue muy libre como las tiendas (sexo tienda y muchos salons de tatuaje); en contraste a Sol, el ambiente audaz de Gran Vía no lo cambiar para nadie. Por eso el gente que entrada en la zona no debe juez; si le quiere señalar alguien o visitar una zona no que un lugar extranjero entonces es el mejor para le a ir a Sol.

Porque me gusta lugares no extranjero pero audaz como Gran Vía, me divierto mi tiempo por allí. Si yo vivo en Madrid, mi apartamento estaría en la zona de Gran Vía. Como me dije temprano, los edificios están grandioso y hermoso; no fotografía puede comprender la belleza de ese zona. Con optimismo, antes de marcharme Madrid, yo quiero visitar Gran Vía en la noche. ¿Por qué? Porque verdaderamente yo siento que Gran Vía es más interesante y increíble en la noche con la gente diferente y la luz noche.

Semana Dos: Puerta del Sol

Concido como un lugar por “the ruffians and royals” Puerta del Sol es un muy interesante parte de Madrid. No como Puerta de Atocha cual ha los edificios de arte y turistico atracciones como que el Reina Sofia, Museo de Prado, el Jardin de Botanica y Parque de Retiro, Puerta del Sol está cera la Plaza Mayor y ha muchos tiendas, restaurantes, y bars. Puerta del Sol o concido solό como “Sol” está el centre del ciudad de Madrid, por eso está verdaderamente increíble cuántos importante lugares son cera la zona.

Las diferentes tiendas no son solamente que hacen “Sol” increíble, está los gentes por todo el día; en la mañana, el tarde y el anoche hay siempre interesante gentes. Hay en “Sol” tres tipos de gente presente a los diferente tiempos. En la mañana, hay propietarios de tiendas, poco clientes, sin hogar gentes y poco vendedores. En el tarde, hay mucho clientes, propietarios de tiendas, diferente actos, y mucho turistas. En el anoche, hay mucho vendedores, manifestantes, sin hogar gentes y gentes va a los restaurantes, bars, y salons de baile. “Sol” es un lugar donde muchos diferente gentes se tartan con cada otra; el rico y el pobre siempre frotan los hombros.

“Sol” es un muy enérgico lugar porque del gente interacciόn. Cada persona de excursionistas al vendedores al clientes al sin hogar gentes hacen Puerta del Sol fabuloso. Yo soy alegre me con experiencia un lugar donde gentes, no los edificios o las estatuas, hacen una zona valer visto; está muy raro.

Semana Uno: Paseo del Prado

Paseo del Prado (Plaza Prado) es una hermosa parte de Madrid. Tenido grandisimo edificios y hermosa statues que celebrar la cultura de Madrid. El calle está bordear por árboles; que crea un magnífico ambiente. Aunque la zona es muy interesante con el Banco de Espana, Jardín de Botanica (cual es muy hermosa, tranquila, y grande) y el Museo de Reina Sofia me visita foco en uno atracciόn: el Museo de Prado.

El Museo de Prado es muy grande y tiene cuatro pisos de arte de diferencia centurios. Dos artesians me gusta estuvieron Goya y Diego Velazques. Pinturas de Goya estuvieron interesante porque el foco en Cristianismo y trabajadores. Mi favorita pintura por Goya estuvo “La Industria” (Industry). “La Industria” tiene dos mujeres se levantan en la misma cama. En su cuarto es una máquina usa en un factorio. La máquina en el cuarto y las mujeres levantan triste dicenme que las mujeres no estan divertido con sus vida; no se gustan el factorio. Es posible Uds. sienten el factorio es robando sus vida, en particular sus juventud. La pintura está triste porque es verdadero. A estar un trabajador es difícil especialmente con una familia porque nunca bastante moneda. Del colores al informacion en la pintura me gusta. Otra pintura mismo como “La Industria” estuvo “El Comercio” (Commerce) que tiene dos hombres juegan carta. Mismo como las mujeres en “La Industria” los hombres tambien están cansado y triste.

Diferente de Goya, muchos pinturas por Diego Velázques tienen royalty o persona parte del council de royal. En su pinturas Velázques hace la gente en la pintura tiene humanidad. Por ejemplo, en la pintura “Esopo” (Aesop) es interesante como Velázques hace Esopo muy humilde. En la pintura Esopo teniό un libro en su izquerda mano y la derecha mano en su ropas; Esopo en la pintura a ver como un normalmente hombre otra que una filosofía. Me siento “Esopo” es uno de Velázques humorístico pinturas. Por Velázques tambien me gusta “La Reina Doña Mariana de Austria” (Queen Marianna of Austria). Es similar como la famosa pintura “Las Meinas” porque es foco en una chica pero es diferente porque la señorita en la pintura parece muy irritado como si no quiere la pictura. Ella cara belleza como no se gusta pero se gusta a estar royal. En la pintura la princesa tenido un blanco flag en su mano. Usualmente un blanco servilleta/bandera representa “rendiciόn” cuando lo pone en el aire pero ella blanco servilleta no está en el aire, está por lado. Con el blanco servilleta por su lado es como si ella quiere estar salva; me siento el blanco servilleta/bandera dice, “Yo rendiciόn. Alguien salváme si posible.” Me gusta como aunque la senorita es royal ella necesita ayudar. Diego Velázques es muy bueno muestra gentes como gentes.

Mi tiempo al Paseo del Prado estuvo muy divertido y educacional. Paseo del Prado ha mucho de la cultura de Madrid y es muy importante a aprender sobre. Paseo del Prado es muy importanta zona al vista.

Pre-Madrid

When I heard about the Madrid program 2 years ago I have to admit that I didn't even know where Madrid was located. I now know where the city is located which is in central Spain and I am extremely excited about my summer voyage through Espana. Maybe it’s because of my active imagination but I don't just view this Madrid summer program as just another summer school in a different country. I really feel it will be a summer voyage filled with laughter, disappointment, beautiful scenery, unbearable weather, friendly people, rude people, pranks, arguments and most importantly adventure. From improving my Spanish, to exploring the city of Madrid (experiencing the vibrancy of the culture that so many people discuss), to trying different dishes, I'm really expecting a lot from my 1-month stay in Madrid. My goal is to absorb as much of Spain as possible; the best way to do that is by keeping an open mind.

Although I'm optimistic about the program and meeting new people who can probably speak Spanish ten times better than me I am not really looking forward to our last three nights in Paris, France; the city is just overrated to me. Now I never been to Paris but all my life I've heard about it (through school) and it just doesn't capture my attention. But because Paris is known as the city of romance and summer brings out people's inner passion a part of me feels that the summer nights in Paris will be pretty awesome, maybe even better than in Madrid.

I really hope I enjoy myself, really improve my Spanish and don't experience withdrawal because I'm so far away from my family.
